HELP, MY PET HAS BAD BREATH!
The causes of bad breath in pets is no different than in humans. Humans get bad breath even with twie a day brushing, using mouth wash and chewing gums. When was the last time you brushed your pets teeth?
It is but natural for them to have bad breath and signs of periodontal disease. Periodontal disease is the #1 health problem in pets. Remember good health starts with oral hygiene. Also if our gastrointestinal tract is healthy, your overall health is healthier.
What can be done? First your pet needs an oral examination to determine the extent of periodontal disease. Sometimes this can be determined only when the pet is anesthetised. There are different forms of periodontal disease.
Stage 1 - Gingivitis: Plaque accumulates and hardens into calculus, reddening of gums, no attachment loss and if caught early is reversible.
Stage 2 - Early Periodontitis: Infection of gum and bony tissue, tissue swelling, upto 25% loss of attachment tissue and irreversible.
Stage 3 - Moderate periodontitis: Upto 50% loss of attachment, roots may be exposed and irreversible.
Stage 4 - Advanced Periodontitis: Over 50% loss of attachment. blood and pus surrounding tooth, tooth may be lost with or without treatment and irreversible.
THIS IS WHAT WE RECOMMEND:
Step 1 - Home care: Toothbrushing is the primary preventative care for maintaining dental health at home. Brushing is recommended once each day. Provide dental treats, diets and chew toys as recommended by veterinarian.
Step 2 - Professional Veterinary Care: Visual examination, complete examination (requires anesthesia) and routine dental cleaning and treatment.
Step 3 - Preventative care: Brushing, using dental diet, treats and medicated chews as recommended by veterinarian, oral rinses, water additives and preventative vaccines.
SEVERE CASE OF PERIODONTAL DZ
Radiograh of the same dog in above picture-this dog is missing the front part of his mandible and maxilla due to severe periodontal disease and bone loss. Surprisingly this pet is doing great.
Please note that the cost for Heartworm treatment has increased due to new regulations. The pharmaceutical company now requires all heartworm positive dogs to be classified (1-4). Class 4 being a very sick dog. To classify a dog we are now required to get chest radiographs, blood work and urinalysis. This is no more an option. The drug is not available without classification. Finally a consultation with the phamaceutical technician is also required.
The heartworm treatment drug is available on a case by case basis only. All assymptomatic dogs and dogs not currently on heartworm prevention or never been on heartworm prevention may not be eligible.
Please make sure your pets are on heartwrom prevention. Having to put your priceless pet through heartworm treatment is expensive than the treatment itself especially when it could have been prevented.
